The fiestas of Benidorm date back to March 1740, when a ship washed ashore during a violent storm. After burning it to prevent epidemics, some boys found the image of the Virgin among the wreckage and took it to the church, where a chapel was later built in her honour. This story is re-enacted every Saturday at five o'clock in the afternoon on the Poniente beach.
These autumn festivities have become a tourist attraction over the years. They are so well established that many British people book their tickets for the fiestas because they already know their character and have had a good time on other occasions. All this makes the month of November a parenthesis before winter, a month in which it is still almost high tourist season.
Don't wait another year, come to Benidorm for those six days in November and take part in the most open, fun and colourful fiestas you can imagine.
