Benidorm has been selected as one of the four finalists for the European Green Leaf 2027 award, a prestigious recognition granted by the European Commission to cities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants that demonstrate strong commitment to environmental sustainability. This nomination highlights Benidorm's proactive approach to tackling climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
The city’s bid stood out for its excellent air quality and water management, including an 18% reduction in consumption and a 36% reuse rate. Benidorm also showed strong progress in biodiversity, green spaces, and circular economy practices.
The finalists —Benidorm, Assen (Netherlands), Saint-Quentin (France), and Siena (Italy)— will defend their candidacies on October 1 and 2 in Vilnius (Lithuania), the current European Green Capital 2025. The award is granted to one or two cities, each receiving €200,000 to support sustainable initiatives during their designated year.
This recognition places Benidorm at the forefront of sustainable tourism in Europe, reinforcing its status as a destination deeply committed to environmental responsibility.
