Benidorm is resuming its annual urban cat sterilization campaign this September, aiming to treat approximately 250 cats before the end of October. The initiative, which began earlier this summer but paused during July and August, will help control the population of stray cats in the city’s urban colonies, enhancing cleanliness and harmony in public areas frequently visited by locals and tourists alike.
This campaign applies the humane and effective CES method (Capture, Sterilize, and Return), carried out by a specialized company and in coordination with the Official College of Veterinarians of Alicante. Once captured, cats are taken to veterinary clinics where they are sterilized, vaccinated against rabies, dewormed, given a health check, and marked before being returned to their colonies.
Eight local veterinary clinics across Benidorm are actively involved, playing a crucial role in the success of this campaign. Fieldwork conducted prior to the campaign identified 42 urban cat colonies across the city, home to around 1,200 cats. These efforts contribute to improving the urban environment and offering a better experience for both residents and visitors.
The campaign is supported by a 12,000-euro grant from the Alicante Provincial Council and a total municipal budget of 20,000 euros.
