José Luis Sarrió García, affectionately known by locals as ‘el metge’ or ‘Dr. Sarrió’, has been named Benidorm's Exemplary Citizen for 2025. This recognition, awarded annually, highlights individuals whose lives are marked by civic values, ethics, and community commitment that serve as an inspiration to others.
With nearly four decades of service as a physician in Benidorm, Sarrió is cherished for his empathy, dedication, and unwavering commitment to public health—especially during the city’s transformation into a tourist destination. From the 1960s onwards, he cared for both residents and visitors, offering services in local clinics, his private practice on Gambo Street, and through emergency care. He also served employees in the growing tourism sector after specializing in Occupational Medicine.
Beyond medicine, José Luis Sarrió has been deeply involved in community service, particularly with organizations like the Lions Club of Benidorm and Cáritas. His humanitarian work includes supporting projects like Benidorm's Children’s Traffic Park and guide dog programs for the visually impaired. A passionate participant in local culture, he’s been active in the traditional “Taula del Bon Profit” since 1972 and contributed to the world of pigeon racing through the “La Isla” and “Sierra Helada” clubs.
This public ceremony is a chance for residents and visitors to come together and honour the life of a man who has helped shape the community spirit of Benidorm.
