Benidorm Showcases Its Sustainable Urban Model at the 4th Hosteltur Sustainable Tourism Forum

Benidorm welcomed over 20 tourism professionals and sustainability experts for a morning of debate and real-life examples on how sustainability drives both environmental and business success.

The 4th Hosteltur Sustainable Tourism Forum, held at Benidorm's municipal auditorium, explored the theme “Sustainability as an Opportunity”, offering insights into real-world strategies — including several already implemented in Benidorm — that demonstrate how sustainable initiatives can benefit the environment, enhance social well-being, and improve business profitability.

Benidorm's unique urban planning was highlighted as a pioneering example. With roots going back to its 1956 General Urban Plan, the city has long prioritized efficient space usage, large public areas, wide green avenues, and building orientations that maximize natural light and ventilation. These early decisions have made Benidorm a benchmark for sustainable tourism today.

Participants also discussed key achievements such as:

  • A water efficiency rate of 96%

  • Use of regenerated water through a fourth supply network

  • Commitment to universal accessibility

  • Innovative urban design that enhances harmony among residents and visitors

Benidorm's leadership in sustainable tourism has earned it notable accolades, including:

  • First certified Smart Tourist Destination (DTI) in the world (2018)

  • European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism (2025)

  • Finalist for the European Green Leaf Award (2027)

The forum included panels with leading voices from the tourism, environmental, and corporate sectors, all focusing on sustainability as a cornerstone for the future of tourism.
