Benidorm has officially submitted its candidacy to host the 2031 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, the pinnacle event in the cyclo-cross calendar, usually held between late January and early February. The final decision will be announced in September during the UCI General Assembly.
This bid comes as Benidorm prepares to welcome, for the fourth consecutive year, a stage of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup on January 18, once again set in the beautiful settings of El Moralet and Foietes Park.
The World Cup race has become a major celebration of cyclo-cross in Spain, drawing over 16,000 spectators annually and generating a powerful boost for local tourism, hospitality, and gastronomy during the winter season. It’s no surprise that the event contributes to hotel occupancy rates surpassing 80% in January, turning the so-called low season into a vibrant time for visitors.
This year’s race will feature exciting course updates, including a new 100-meter sand finish section on Avenida 9 d’Octubre — designed to challenge the riders and enhance the spectacle for fans.
Cycling superstars are set to descend on Benidorm once again. Thibau Nys, last year’s winner, is confirmed, along with Toon Aerts, the current European champion. Mathieu Van der Poel, reigning world champion and global cycling icon, has also included the event in his provisional race calendar.
Benidorm’s ambition to host the 2031 World Championships would mark the return of this prestigious event to Spain after more than three decades. The last time it was held in the country was in 1990 in Getxo. If successful, it would not be the first world cycling event in Benidorm — the city proudly hosted the 1992 Road World Championships, remembered as a true festival of cycling.
Benidorm continues to strengthen its position as a top-tier sports tourism destination, blending elite competition with its unique charm, climate, and hospitality.
