Benidorm measures the sustainable habits of its visitors to determine the environmental impact of their stays

Benidorm has included a dedicated sustainability section in its annual Tourist Survey to better understand visitors’ environmental habits and evaluate how tourist activity affects the destination’s ecological footprint.

Conducted from July to October 2025 with more than 900 tourists staying in Benidorm, the survey shows that visitors are particularly engaged in efficient water use (88.6 %) and recycling according to local guidelines (84.3 %). Other sustainable behaviors include choosing local products (78.4 %) and eco-friendly mobility, such as public transport or walking (78.9 %). Avoiding single-use plastics, though still widely adopted (66.2 %), showed the lowest rate among the habits studied.

The results also highlight how visitors perceive Benidorm as a sustainable destination:

  • 91.8 % say the beaches meet high environmental quality standards.

  • 87.9 % find the urban spaces accessible to all people.

  • 87.5 % value sustainable practices in hotels.

  • 70.6 % appreciate access to green areas.

The survey also provided insights into tourist profiles: 49.3 % traveled by plane, 40.1 % by private vehicle, and 66.1 % stayed in hotels. The average stay was 8.8 days. Playa de Levante was the most visited area (41.9 %), and 72.9 % of visitors were repeat tourists. Overall satisfaction was high with an 8.8 out of 10 rating, and recommendation of Benidorm scored equally well.

This study confirms that not only does Benidorm strive to be a sustainable destination, but its visitors also bring environmentally responsible behaviors to their holiday experience.
