Our Commitment
At Visit Benidorm, we understand that tourism promotion involves travel and, therefore, an associated carbon footprint. For this reason, we work under a continuous improvement approach based on three principles: measuring, reducing and offsetting the environmental impact of our activity.
As part of this commitment, we have calculated the emissions generated by promotional activities involving travel by Visit Benidorm representatives and have offset them through a certified carbon dioxide (CO₂) absorption project.
Scope of the Calculation
The carbon footprint calculation includes only those promotional activities that involve travel, such as:
Professional trade fairs
Workshops and presentations
Roadshows
Street marketing
Conferences
Attendance at events and collaborative actions
Period analysed: 2015–2025
Total number of actions analysed: 660
Total kilometres travelled, return trips included: 1,799,325 km
Total associated emissions: 248,632.67 kg of CO₂
Calculation source: CeroCO2
Visit Benidorm CO₂ Credits Certificate
Offsetting Project
The calculated emissions have been offset through Visit Benidorm’s participation in the Marina Alta Ecorestoration project, developed in the municipality of Pego, Alicante, and coordinated by Fundación Desert Leaves.
This project aims to restore areas affected by major forest fires through:
Repairing dry-stone walls and creating barriers against erosion
Planting native species
Improving biodiversity
Preventing future fires
Protecting aquifers and improving water infiltration
The project involves the planting of approximately 15,000 trees and shrubs of seven different species, with an estimated absorption capacity of around 2,000 tonnes of CO₂ during their growth.
Visit Benidorm’s Contribution
Fundación Visit Benidorm has financed the planting of:
1,868 trees
Amount contributed: €21,994.17
Carbon credits obtained: 249
CO₂ to be absorbed over 40 years: 249 tonnes
This contribution grants ownership of the carbon credits corresponding to the emissions generated by Visit Benidorm’s promotional activities during the 2015–2025 period.
Guarantees and Verification
Project registered in the Register of Absorption Projects of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
Methodology applied: Guide for Estimating Carbon Dioxide Absorptions (MITECO, version 4, May 2019).
Fundación Desert Leaves is an official partner of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Continuous Improvement Approach
Offsetting does not replace reduction actions. Visit Benidorm is progressively working on:
Optimising travel
Prioritising more efficient means of transport whenever possible
Integrating sustainability criteria into the planning of promotional actions.
