Benidorm has been awarded the Biosphere certification, a distinction that highlights the destination’s commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability, as well as to the continuous improvement of its tourism model.
Receiving this certification is an important milestone for the city, further strengthening its position as an innovative destination ready to offer a higher-quality experience for both visitors and residents. The recognition follows an external audit focused on the management of tourism-related public services and their positive impact on the local environment and community.
This achievement forms part of a wider strategy to support balanced, sustainable tourism growth that brings benefits to the destination as a whole. With this recognition, Benidorm also joins the international Biosphere community of destinations committed to responsible tourism.
Following this first phase, the project now moves into a new stage aimed at local tourism businesses. The goal is to help hotels, accommodation providers, restaurants, shops and other visitor-related services improve their competitiveness through sustainability and also work towards obtaining the Biosphere certification.
To support this, businesses will have access to a self-assessment platform that will help them understand their current starting point in terms of sustainability. From there, they will be able to benefit from specialist advice and free training to introduce improvements and move forward in the certification process.
This initiative is another opportunity to reinforce Benidorm’s image as a destination committed to more conscious, innovative tourism, in line with the expectations of today’s travellers.
