Benidorm takes another step forward in its commitment to sustainable tourism by submitting its candidacy for the European Green Leaf 2028 awards, a European Commission initiative recognising cities under 100,000 inhabitants for their environmental excellence, urban innovation and quality of life.
After reaching the finalist stage in the previous edition, the city presents an enhanced proposal that reflects improvements across its sustainability indicators. The bid highlights a tourism model that successfully combines high visitor capacity with efficient urban planning, responsible resource management and continuous environmental improvement.
Among its strongest points, Benidorm has received particularly high scores in areas such as air quality and climate change mitigation strategies, reinforcing its position as a destination that balances tourism development with environmental responsibility.
The selection process is expected to announce finalist cities in early summer, with the final decision to be made in autumn following project presentations before a European jury.
Through this candidacy, Benidorm reaffirms its position as an innovative, sustainable destination committed to the wellbeing of both residents and visitors.
