Benidorm to honour scientist Juan Carlos Izpisúa with the 2026 Europe Distinction Award

Benidorm will add another internationally respected name to its story in 2026. Scientist Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte, one of the world’s leading figures in regenerative biology and advanced medicine, will receive the Europe Distinction Award, a recognition reserved for outstanding contributions linked to progress, cooperation and European values.
The announcement reinforces Benidorm’s image as more than a tourism destination. It also presents the city as a place connected to talent, opportunity and global excellence. Izpisúa has a strong personal bond with Benidorm, where he spent part of his youth and to which he continues to return regularly.
From his early years working in the local hospitality sector to leading some of the most innovative scientific projects in the world, his career reflects a story of determination and international success with roots in Benidorm.
He is currently based in the United States, where he leads the San Diego division of Altos Labs, focused on regenerative medicine. His research explores cellular regeneration, organ rejuvenation and healthier longevity — fields expected to shape the future of medicine.
Author of more than 500 scientific publications and recognised by international media such as TIME, which named him among the most influential leaders in global health, Izpisúa represents the worldwide impact of local talent.
