The bonfires of Saint John

Summer officially starts with fire

Description: If the tradition of this festival marks the burning of ancient objects, the proximity of the city of Alicante has led to other more refined customs. As in March, effigies are built to be destroyed by fire in a symbolism that gives meaning to the festival with the destruction of old feelings and experiences with the arrival of new hopes and desires.

The “belleas” are the Alicante festival queens who pass through the streets in colourful parades with floats and music everywhere. The bonfires of the  Market, the Cala and the Campo fill the various districts of the town with celebrations.

It should be noted that for some years a spontaneous concentration has led to a parallel celebration. If the official fires burn the night of the 24th.
