Séquia Mare Park is a key area in the history of Benidorm and its region. Its origins go back to the Reg Major de l'Alfàs, created in 1666 by Beatriz Fajardo de Mendoza, which allowed Benidorm to regain its status as an independent municipality after being abandoned in the 16th century due to corsair attacks.
This irrigation canal, popularly known as La Séquia Mare, supplied water to Polop, La Nucia, l'Alfàs del Pi and Benidorm for centuries, boosting agriculture and population growth. Its construction allowed the irrigation of crops, the operation of flour mills and the supply of cisterns, becoming the basis of the local economy.
Over time, the irrigation canal transformed the landscape, with the emergence of farmhouses and a dispersed habitat that multiplied the population. However, with the arrival of the Lower Algar Canal and the expansion of tourism in Benidorm, the Séquia Mare lost its original function and fell into disuse around 1990.
Today, the Séquia Mare Park is a tribute to this historic infrastructure that allowed the repopulation of Benidorm and its region. Its adaptation and conservation make it possible to learn about the importance of water in the development of the area and to get in touch with the city's roots. An ideal place to stroll around, enjoy nature and discover the past that gave life to Benidorm.
