🔎 Discover Benidorm’s archaeological site, a unique place where history comes to life.
The 'castellum' at Tossal de La Cala has been museumized in different phases and is now open to the public. Located on a 100-meter-high hill, this site was excavated in the 1940s by Father Belda and later in 1956 by Professor M. Tarradell, dating the remains to between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC.
🏛 Since 2013, archaeological excavations conducted by the University of Alicante have revealed that this Roman settlement was occupied by the armies of Quintus Sertorius during the Sertorian Wars.
🛡 The walls, different rooms, and discovered materials confirm without a doubt that Tossal de La Cala was a Roman military fortress, built under the orders of General Sertorius as part of a coastal fortification plan in northern Alicante, likely around 77 BC.
🌊 A strategic stronghold:
This fort was part of a network of Roman coastal military outposts spread across the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa regions. All these settlements were located on cliffs and hard-to-access coves, playing a crucial role in monitoring naval traffic, both friendly and enemy, during wartime.
