Benidorm renews DTI certification

The destination has increased its score in the Accessibility axis by more than 20 points after meeting the SEGITTUR requirements. This accreditation is valid until 1 August 2026.

Benidorm renews DTI certification

Benidorm has renewed its certification as a Smart Tourism Destination (DTI), having met the requirements of the SEGITTUR methodology.

The city has already undergone the revision of its DTI Diagnostic Report, originally drawn up by SEGITTUR in 2018, implementing in the destination the Smart Tourism Destination methodology promoted by the Spanish Secretary of State for Tourism.

The Smart Tourism Destination distinction is only awarded if the destination achieves a score of at least 80% in the degree of compliance with the requirements that make up the new DTI methodology, a percentage that the city has exceeded and which allows it to renew its accreditation.

After recalling that "Benidorm was the first DTI certified in the world in 2018 with the UNE 178501 standard and to distinguish itself under the methodology of the National DTI Network on that date with the first diagnostic report", the mayor has detailed that "in this new diagnosis the axes of governance, innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility have been evaluated one by one". It is in this last area that "the improvement has been spectacular, with an increase of more than 20 points in the rating obtained in 2018".

Specifically, the increase was 21.1 points, going from 62.3% compliance in 2018 to 83.4% achieved on this occasion.

The Mayor affirmed that "this result is proof of our firm and sustained commitment to accessibility over time, which has led us to act in all the city's districts, to promote a specific accessibility plan for tourism and to work on the ground with organisations that promote inclusion". In this regard, he cited the gradual removal of architectural barriers, the commitment to the single platform on many of the city's roads and the implementation of the Navilens system to guide people with sight problems.

The other axes have obtained a score similar to that of the diagnosis six years ago, "with the greatest margin for improvement in the area of technology, which has reached 75.9%".

As SEGITTUR points out, with the renewal of its accreditation, "Benidorm joins the group of destinations that have achieved excellence in the implementation of the DTI model, placing itself at the forefront of tourism development and with a future strategy based on governance, sustainability, accessibility, innovation and technology as its backbone".

The DTI model developed by Spain is a national and international reference, recognised as good practice by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the European Commission, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The DTI initiative is also part of the Spanish Urban Agenda 2019.
